The plan for this project is to create a digital environment that could be put into a film that we would make with the actors from the acting course at UAL. The film had to be a scene that was taken from the Sandman comics and adapted in any way we wanted. The goal was to make a 30 second long film using the green screen and was recognisable as a scene from the comic.

This is the scene from the comic and there is very few shots of the entire environment, so making sure these were accurate so that it is true to the source material and therefore could be recognised by an avid comic reader.
Romanesque Architecture

This is architecture that was similar to the scene from the comic, the architectural design is called Romanesque Architecture. This mood board (above)was done by Paula, a group member on our course. This is an important bit of research as we were only able to see a bit of the scene so we had to fill in a lot of blanks, and we used this to help us. The mood board below was done by me.

Initial Location Mood board

One of the early concepts for the secondary location was going to be a real world look in a very contemporary space, this was later scrapped for a garden in the same aesthetic as the first location. This was used to explain my ideas to the other team members
Sketches
These sketches are of the set that we used in the end and were helpful in creating the tone and look that we wanted for the set. They show a lot of the background meaning that there are small details like the towers on the corners of the buildings

These 2 sketches show the original comic accurate version of this set would have looked like, these were used to work out what we would have put into the scene and the logistics of it.
Colour Inspo

The colour inspiration was also an essential detail as we had to make sure that it was going to match the comic and therefore be a recognisable scene. I also drew inspiration from Zack Snyder's ‘300’ to help make sure the scene was well adapted from the comics.
Final Storyboard

This is a Storyboard done by Paula in our group, and was used during production to line up our shots and to help the actors to know which way to face. This helped hugely on the day and made the production of the film a lot less stressful,

These are the 3D Models that were used initially to discuss the shape and design of the courtyard we were designing, the first 2 are almost directly copied from the comic and then the second two are done similarly to the one inspired by Harry Potter. They were all done by me.
Stronghold Comic:
The top model was a copied version of the stronghold taken almost directly from the comic and made by myself, this was discussed for a while however we decided to make our own version of it by redesigning the shape of the stronghold to make it smaller and remove the ceiling to make it an open air building instead. I tried to use the comic to find the size and shape of the building however there isn’t very much to go on as most of the shots in this room are very close to the characters and tends to ignore any of the background.

This is what the scene would look like when the rounder table is added in, this was another prop that I had designed to put into the scene as this was more accurate to the source material. This table is very much a centre piece of the scene and it says a lot bout how the family operate so actually changing the table from rectangular from spherical is an important one. This is how the family dynamic operates they all sit equally spaced apart from the centre of the table and there is no head of the family just as there is no head of the table.
This table was the first one that I designed and made and the aim was to make it look over the top and like a comic book, this was very early on in the design process as we were still thinking about the scene and how it was going to work.
In the image to the right you can see the lighting that was used to show the table, I used a very high up ‘sun’ light, this ironically created the moonlight for the scene and I used an area light which would represent the candle that would be in the scene

Courtyard Final Scene

The courtyard was finished and lit by Paula, this scene was what the final version looked like. The bottom images were made by Sarah and show the garden scene from the beginning of the film.

This is a few images of the green screening process. This was during our 4 hour total session in which we were able to actually film these scenes and finish production.
