Gulliver's Travels
EXISTING AR APPS
In Unit 5 we were told to make an AR app that people could download when in the area, and then follow the activities and learn about the subject of Gulliver's Travels (GROUP A). The Gulliver's Travels idea came from us working out that Jonathan Swift the author of the book lived in the area in the 1700's, and as well as this there is a large collection of authors, poets, and politicians who lived there in the 1700's and 1800's making it a huge point of cultural development for London in this time and therefore has a lot of cultural relevance and we worked out that it would be good to teach the public about this. The Marble Arch area is a large open public space which made it perfect for the sort of thing we had in mind as there was a lot of space to use and people could walk around and not have to worry about traffic or other hazards. The reason we chose AR was as this was a request from the people at Yellow who is the company that we are designing this app for, this meant that people are able to still see the new buildings and area as well as the models we made and therefore gives an idea of scale of these large Gulliver sized objects. Which will help for the entertainment aspect of it and hopefully not make it as uninteresting as it could be if it was just reading and then walking to different areas.
The first bit of research I did was on existing AR apps that we could draw inspiration for and this meant that we were able to see the successes and short comings of those apps.
This research was to show what people would want to see from the app that we would make, this was an essential process of the creation of the app. I also made a mock up of the UI that we would have to use just so that it was easier to visualize and so that we could easily communicate our ideas.
PAGE DESIGN
For this part of the project I was tasked with designing pages of contents to put into the book that the app user would be able to use and then read and this would be there form of the learning part of the app. There was an idea that was discussed to make a more complicated and a less complicated version of the texts so that there is a version that kids are able to use and then there could be a version that is usable for the more interested user. This would make it more accessible for people. Each page represents an object that the user would find there should be 6 in total but we only conceptualised 4 of them. These are the more complicated versions and therefore would be for the more enthusiastic user of the app. I was given the page design and had to use research to fill it and then make it look like a written piece of paper as opposed to something that would be made on a laptop to give it a more authentic look. These will be used as PNG files and put into a book on Blender and then end up as a 3D model that will go into the app.
The group I worked with have made the rest of the project into a presentation in which will be presented to the Westminster Council and the people at Yellow (the company the project is made for). This allowed us to find out what we did well and what we can improve on before this final presentation which will be used to take to the final stages of actually creating the app, and it'll then be put on display out in Marble Arch.
